Healthy Living Options

Healthy Living Options Series

Healthy Living Options is a series of booklets that encourages healthy living in the community.

The first Healthy Living Options is a booklet that provides alternative inexpensive or free healthy activities, classes and courses in the local area. The booklet was widely accepted by GPs, health professionals and community as a useful resource to encourage healthy living. This was updated with  the Healthy Living Options 2023 edition.

Due to COVID-19, many of the activities were no longer available so the challenge was to provide a list of activities that could be done safely by residents staying at home.

An updated version of the Healthy Living Options 2020 was developed as an online resource with new activities and substitute activities without the face-to-face contact, and were offered online or telephone-based. Activities included exercise classes, dancing lessons and at-home activities providing skills and knowledge to grow your own produce. View here: Healthy Living Options – Online Edition 2024

Clinicians report that there is a belief among many overweight residents that they are unable to afford healthy food. To assist in the sourcing of healthy food and in providing preparation skills, a new ‘Food’ edition of Healthy Living Options has been prepared. This booklet provides a variety of websites and local facilities for the residents to use to learn to cook, find inexpensive healthy food and even be able to ‘grow their own’.

This booklet has been designed for health professionals to use with their clients and patients to provide help and support in improving their diets and those of their families.

We realise that sometimes it isn’t easy to find the healthy option, especially when you’re on a budget. For this reason we put together the Healthy Living Options: Affordable Food Edition which will give you some ideas on how you can find, prepare and eat healthy food, even if you’re not too confident in the kitchen. We’ve tried to source recipes, lessons, food suppliers and classes that are either free or very inexpensive.

Out & About was compiled as a directory to encourage our residents to
get outside, explore and enjoy the many outdoor experiences existing in western
Sydney. The directory outlines the numerous outdoor facilities; where you can learn skills to take advantage of these resources; clubs to join; and ways to connect with nature.

Improving the overall health and wellbeing of the people of western Sydney is the aim of Western Sydney Diabetes and our Alliance partners. We want to provide our residents with simple and practical ways to help keep themselves, and their families, healthy.
Our diet and weight play an important role in helping us remain healthy to enjoy the fun things in life. But with all the information and confusing messaging about food and ingredients, it’s often difficult to confidently make good food choices. To help Australians improve their diets, the CSIRO has
used the latest scientific evidence to develop and test the CSIRO Low-Carb diet.

So we wanted to give you a ‘taster’ of what the diet is all about with the Healthy Recipe Book.
